DAILY PROGAM

aSSEMBLY & class devotion

Through classroom devotion, chapel, and whole-school assemblies, we provide various opportunities to nurture spiritual and moral development grounded in God's teachings. We engage in discussions, reflection, worship, and prayer to ensure that children grow holistically to become strong, confident, servant leaders of the world.

Academics

Our school is structured into four divisions: Pre-Primary (ages 3-6), Primary (ages 6-12), Junior Secondary (ages 12-16), and High School/Senior Secondary (ages 16-18).

Pre-Primary classes (Playgroup, Pre-Primary 1, and 2) focus on developing foundational listening, speaking, and cognitive skills, while also enhancing fine motor abilities and social interactions through play. These classes provide a strong foundation for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), ensuring children are well-prepared to thrive in their future education.

Since 2017, we have adopted the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), part of Kenya’s educational reform to move away from the content-heavy, rote-learning "8-4-4" system of the late 1980s. This shift introduces a more holistic, skills-based approach that focuses on equipping children with practical, transferable skills and knowledge for future labour markets and life.

We currently offer the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) for Primary and Junior Secondary and are in the process of fully phasing out the "8-4-4" system by the end of 2027.

Starting in January 2025, our current "High School" will transition to "Senior Secondary" as prescribed by the CBC.

BOARDING

It is common practice in Kenya to send children to Boarding School as early as 6 years old.

At Koinonia, we believe that children should be raised by their parents for as long as possible, forming stronger relationships and increasing healthier futures for each child.

We only accept boarding from Grade 7 (Junior Secondary) after which our students are cared for by a dedicated, house matron.

LUNCH

Many of our children come from households living below the national and international poverty line. According to reports, 36.1% of Kenyans live on less than USD 2.15 per day, while as many as 91.3% fall below the USD 6.85 per day threshold.

Many of our children are unable to afford eat on a daily basis, often relying on a single, nutritionally inadequate meal per day. To ensure a safe and conducive learning environment, we provide all of our students with a nutritious snack and a healthy lunch each day.

sports

To provide a holistic education, we offer a variety of sports that help children develop curiosity, dexterity, discipline, and teamwork skills. Our sports programs include swimming, handball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, netball, and various field athletics.

Every child has dedicated time for Physical Education (PE) and sports each day, allowing them to move their bodies and acquire essential skills beyond the classroom.

We take pride in our achievements since relocating to Maai Mahiu in 2020, having reached county-level tournaments in karate, netball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, and swimming.

As part of our facility expansion plans, we aim to build a 25-meter pool on our premises, a unique feature that no other school in our region currently offers. In the meantime, we bus our students to weekly swimming lessons. Learn more about our Building Project here

the arts

Even before the introduction of the CBC, Koinonia has always prioritized giving our children access to dance, music, and the arts.

We believe every child should have the opportunity to discover and nurture their talents, whether in academics, music, drama, or art.

Our dedicated music, drama, and art teachers offer our students a unique and diverse educational experience.
