THE SEWING PROJECT

Empowering Parents and Community: Koinonia launched a Sewing Project specifically to benefit the parents of Koinonia Education Centre students. Instead of simply providing material donations, the program focuses on capacity building by offering free training, and equipping participants with valuable skills to generate sustainable income.

Post-Training Support: Upon completing the sewing course, beneficiaries receive a sewing machine to help them start their own sewing business. The cost of the machine is repaid in manageable instalments from the income they generate through their sales.

Income Opportunities: Participants are given the opportunity to earn income by producing trendy garments and accessories under the Koinonia Education Centre brand, allowing them to put their newly acquired skills into practice.

Expanding Reach: The project has also opened its doors to passionate women who previously acquired tailoring skills elsewhere but lacked an outlet to use them. These women have refined their abilities to meet our high standards and have played a crucial role in helping us meet tight deadlines for major orders.

Sales From The Sewing Project:

Reinvestment and Support: Proceeds from the Sewing Project are reinvested to sustain the club, support product development, and assist with the running of Koinonia Education Centre. For example, the project contributed towards purchasing the school bus. Funds are also used for essential project needs, including the salary of the full-time trainer, maintenance of sewing machines, and replenishing fabric and accessories.

Project Items: We produce a diverse range of items, including various sizes of bags, hand towels, beach towels, bath towels, café aprons, dress aprons, and gloves. These products are sold to well-wishers, at school art and craft fairs, and are also exported to Japan. Each product has a different labor cost, so the more items produced, the higher the earnings for the beneficiaries.
